Criteria for Exclusion from School

If your child gets sick, it is often most appropriate to keep him/her home from school. A child who is sick will not be able to perform well in school and is likely to spread the illness to other children and staff. Please make arrangements for childcare ahead of time so you will not be caught without a place for your child to stay if he/she is ill.

Our school policy states that you should not send your child to school if he/she has:

1. Fever (>100.4 degrees) in the past 24 hours. A child should not come back to school until the temperature is normal for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medication.

2. Vomiting in the past 24 hours (even once). A child should not come back to school until the vomiting has ceased for 24 hours or a doctor’s note stating the reason for the vomiting is not infectious.

3. Two loose stools in the past 24 hours. A child should not come back to school until they are diarrhea free for 24 hours or a doctor’s note stating the reason for the loose stools is not infectious.

4. Any rash (must provide a doctor’s note stating the rash is not infectious before returning to school).

6. Strep Throat (must have been taking an antibiotic for at least 24 hours before returning to school).

7. Bad cold, with a very runny nose or bad cough, especially if it has kept the child awake at night.

8. Eye/Ear infection (redness, itchiness, oozing a yellow or green discharge and/or “crusty” drainage)

Additionally,

  • Please notify the school nurse if your child has an injury outside of school, as your child may need to be restricted from recess or physical activity depending on the injury.
  • For any child who has been hospitalized, the school requires a copy of discharge orders prior to the student’s return to school. Return to school documents may also be required. Please speak to the school nurse for details. Additionally, parents/guardians must contact the school nurse in order to share any additional medical information.

If your child becomes ill at school and the teacher or school nurse feels the child is too sick to benefit from school or is contagious to other children, you will be called to come and take him/her home from school. Keeping your sick child at home will minimize the spread of infections and viruses in the classroom. It is essential that your child’s teacher have a phone number where you can be contacted during the day and an emergency number in the event you cannot be reached. Please be sure that arrangements can be made to transport your child home from school and that childcare is available in case of illness. If your daytime or emergency phone number changes during the year, please notify your child’s teacher immediately or the front office.

These guidelines are meant to serve the best interests of all the children in our school. If you have questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact the school health office or our Lead Nurse.
