Protecting Student Rights

Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment (PPRA) Policy
- Parents and guardians have a right to inspect any survey created by third parties
- Arrangements will be made to protect student privacy in the event of the administration or distribution of a survey to a student containing one or more of the following items: (1) political affiliations or beliefs of the student or the student’s parent/guardian; (2) mental or psychological problems of the student or the student’s family; (3) sex behavior or attitudes; (4) illegal, anti-social, self- incriminating, or demeaning behavior; (5) critical appraisals of other individuals with whom respondents have close family relationships; (6) legally recognized privileged or analogous relationships, such as those of lawyers, physicians, and ministers; (7) religious practices, affiliations, or beliefs of the student or the student’s parent/guardian; (8) income (other than that required by law to determine eligibility for participation in a program or for receiving financial assistance under such program)
- Parents and guardians have a right to inspect instructional materials used as part of the curriculum, including any applicable procedures
- Arrangements will be made to protect student privacy in the event of physical examinations or screenings that may be administered
- Parents and guardians have a right to inspect any instrument used for the Collection, use, and disclosure of student personal information for marketing purposes, including arrangements to protect student privacy in the event of such collections, disclosure, or use, before it is administered or distributed to a student, including any applicable procedures

Opt-Out Rights
Parents and guardians have the right to opt out of:
- Collection, disclosure, or use of personal information collected from students for marketing, sales, or other distribution (this does not apply to the collection, disclosure, or use of personal information collected from students for the exclusive purpose of developing, evaluating, or providing educational products or services for, or to, students or educational institutions)
- Administration of any survey containing one or more of the following protected areas: (1) political affiliations or beliefs of the student or the student’s parent/guardian; (2) mental or psychological problems of the student or the student’s family; (3) sex behavior or attitudes; (4) illegal, anti- social, self-incriminating, or demeaning behavior; (5) critical appraisals of other individuals with whom respondents have close family relationships; (6) legally recognized privileged or analogous relationships (e.g., lawyers, physicians, ministers); (7) religious practices, affiliations, or beliefs of the student or student’s parent/guardian; or (8) income (other than that required by law to determine eligibility for participation in a program or for receiving financial assistance under the program); and
- Non-emergency, invasive physical examination or screening required as a condition of attendance and not necessary to protect the immediate health and safety of the student, or of other students, except for hearing, vision, or scoliosis screenings, or any physical exam or screening permitted or required under State law.

For parents and guardians of students who are deaf, hard of hearing, blind, or visually impaired:Parents and guardians are hereby notified of the existence and services of the Illinois School for the Deaf or the Illinois School for the Visually Impaired in Jacksonville, Illinois.

Prohibition of Teen Dating Violence
Engaging in teen dating violence that takes place at school, on school property, at school-sponsored activities, or in vehicles used for school-provided transportation is prohibited. For purposes of this policy, the term teen dating violence occurs whenever a student who is 13 to 19 years of age uses or threatens to use physical, mental, or emotional abuse to control an individual in the dating relationship; or uses or threatens to use sexual violence in the dating relationship.

Eye Examinations & Vision Screenings
This serves as notice to the parents/guardians of kindergarten students or students enrolling in school for the first time that each student must have an eye exam by October 15. The eye exam must be completed within 1 year prior to the first day of the school year the student enters kindergarten or school for the first time in Illinois.This requirement can be waived for students who show an undue burden or a lack of access to an optometrist or to a physician who performs eye examinations. The Illinois Department of Public Health wavier form is available at the school district or school office or for download below. The waiver form must be submitted by October 15 of the school year.
* Vision screening is not a substitute for a complete eye and vision evaluation by an eye doctor. Your child is not required to undergo a vision screening if an optometrist or ophthalmologist has completed and signed a report form indicating that an examination has been administered within the previous 12 months.

Dental Examinations
This serves as notice to the parents/guardians of kindergarten, 2nd, 6th, and 9th grade students that each student must have a dental examination and submit proof of such an examination by May 15 of the school year. The dental examination must have taken place within 18 months prior to May 15 of the school year.
This requirement can be waived for students who show an undue burden or a lack of access to a dentist. The waiver form must be submitted by May 15 of the school year.

Student Absence Notification Policy

Parent/Guardian Responsibilities
Parents and guardians are hereby notifient of their responsibility to authorize any absence and to notify the school in advance or at the time of any absence. TrueNorth requires, at the time of enrollment, at least one but not more than two telephone numbers at which parents/guardians may be reached by the school regarding absence notification.

Section 504 Services
Students with disabilities who do not qualify for an IEP under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act may qualify for services under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 if the child (i) has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities, (ii) has a record of physical or mental impairment, or (iii) is regarded as having a physical or mental impairment.
